Lightning Protection
Power systems have always been susceptible to the detrimental effects of
lightning. The rapidly advancing field of electronic based control
systems has created a problem unknown to earlier electrical and electronic
products. Lightning and its influences have been the greatest contributor
to both destructive and disruptive phenomena; to power lines, data lines, and
even the overall facility.
Solving these problems requires a specialized form of expertise in lightning
protection concepts, power systems protection and/or conditioning systems
usually not available within most industry's engineering departments or
electrical engineering firms. Techniques used as little as five years ago
are ineffective in the contemporary system's environment. Furthermore,
equipment manufacturers are not necessarily applications experts.
